hidden women of the sea
The Hiddenwomen of the Sea are Suzanne Chaillot, Vero Orsingher, and Kathleen Whitehurst. Hailing from New Orleans to France to Belize, these creative women come together to create some of the loveliest glass jewels we have seen. They find the majority of their se glass along the beaches and reefs of Central America (especially Belize), the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the Eastern Seaboard, and inlet waterways such as the Mississippi River.
The majority of the light green and aqua glass is from old Coca Cola bottles. The dark greens are likely from wine and beer bottles. The blues are probably from Vick's Vapor Rub, Philip's Milk of Magnesia, old canning jars and Noxzema jars.
Depression glass is usually responsible for the beautiful pastel colors that they find. Old Clorox bottles, apothecary bottles and beer bottles give them the dark brown glass that they use. Red is a very rare color. This sought after color may be from old boat and vehicle lights or stained glass windows. After hurricanes Katrina and Rita, they found red glass from where a church had been.
The glass artists do find glass ready to use, but when they find the perfect color in a less than perfect shape, they cut, shape, and tumble the glass themselves. They use sand from the beaches for this process. The clay that they use to design around their glass is a special compound using a hardener. This renders the clay waterproof and resistant to the salt and sea air.
